Wooden Front Door
Nothing adds grace and elegance to a home as a wooden front door. When people come up to the home the first
thing they see is the door. It is inviting to them and it seems to say goodbye when they leave. Many older homes
have a wooden front door and they are becoming more popular as the years go by.
In medieval Europe, doors were made by nailing planks to each other and putting them up on the wall. These were
extremely heavy and usually outlasted the building. Some were so heavy it would take two or three strong men to
open and close them.
In the early days of America, people started putting doors in their homes. They realized that doors would keep
out the dirt and debris, and a wooden front door would have a bit of charm. During the eighteenth and early
nineteenth century structural design of a wooden door showed wide choices for new wood door styles. Some were
extremely ornate with cut glass, or some older ones had beveled glass or mirrors on top of them.
A wooden front door may not be made of wood, of any kind. They can be made synthetics.
Manufactures will make synthetic doors to look as good as a wooden front door. They are cheaper to make and are not
very heavy.
Synthetic doors are a lot easier to break into. Other materials used for front doors can be stamped hardboard
and can be made to look just like a wooden front door.
There are so many different styles for a wooden front door. Whether you are remodeling a home or building it
from the ground up, there are doors to fit every style. Many a wooden front door can have glass, mirrors or be
solid wood. Wanting the old Victorian style, go for the solid wood maybe with an arch of glass on top. That style
has elegance beyond any other door and has been around a long time. There are many sizes and designs for every
house being built or being remodeled.
If so inclined, one can put in a wooden front door with little effort. If the door is not stained when bought,
stain it or paint it. To this before the door is hung, it makes the job a lot easier. Adjust the height of the
door, making sure it fits the existing door frame.
Draw on the door in pencil where the hinges and nails will go once the door is hung. Drill the holes for the
hinges and attach them to the door. Hang the door, being sure to align everything so it fits right in. two people
would be better one on this. Finish it off with the rest of the hardware. Inspect the finished door to be sure it
hangs right and opens and closes right.
A wooden front door will last a lifetime if taken care of properly. Weather can warp it or split the wood. But
if properly sealed this should not happen.
